Some fixes out; more coming!
We’ve pushed out fixes that address the problem of self-following and image uploading.
We’re also working on the follower inconsistency problem. To recap: some users are seeing follower and following data that is a couple days old. It does not reflect recent changes. That means you might follow someone and then come back a little while later and see that the change didn’t take.

The number of folks you follow or who are following you may have changed unexpectedly.
In some cases, small changes are expected as suspended accounts are being cleared from the system. However, there are also cases where people will follow a user and subsequently find themselves unfollowing minutes later.

As we make these changes you may see some timeouts as you try to access Twitter. Should be resolved quickly.
Update (12:35p): Back to normal.
Slowness
Some users are experiencing very slow load times. We are working on this problem.
Update: The site latency problem has been largely resolved but we are seeing timeline delays.
Update: Timelines updates were behind about 5 minutes; we’re now returning to normal.
Search behind realtime
Maintenance has caused search to fall behind realtime, it will be catching up imminently.
Twitter downtime
We’re working to recover from a site-wide outage. We will update here as we learn more.
Update (1:52p): We’re back up now. We’re tracking down the cause of the system instability that caused this problem in the first place. While we resolve the underlying cause, there may be some additional downtime.

In the next few minutes, you may be logged out of twitter.com as we’re making some changes to how we handle sessions. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Catching back up
Twitter is catching up after delivery delays this morning. Update: all caught up.
Delivery delays
We’re experiencing some delays in the amount of time it takes for updates to appear in timelines. Working on this now.
Update: Normal message delivery has been restored.
Multiple accounts hacked. Situation stable.
A number of high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised this morning, and fake/spam updates were sent on their behalf.
We have identified the cause and blocked it. We are working to restore compromised accounts.
As a precaution, it would be prudent to reset your Twitter password and make sure email in your settings is your own.
